Nestled at the southern fringe of Chatfield Reservoir within Chatfield State Park, the site adjoins the gentle curve of King Fisher Lake. The immediate landscape encompasses wetlands, trees, a river, a ditch, mountain vistas, and an existing parking lot. The design philosophy for this nature center rethinks traditional programming, responding to historical context and site features to produce an innovative architectural structure.
Inspired by a beaver dam, the design allows users shelter within the structure before seamlessly reintegrating them into the surrounding nature. Evoking the fluidity of water rhythms, the architectural form harmoniously unfolds from the site, creating a dynamic structure in tune with its context.
The integration of classroom and exhibit elements forms an outdoor exhibit, fostering a profound connection between users and the environment. The architectural layout guides users through light and shadow, directing their gaze toward trees or water. This intentional orchestration of light and space creates an immersive experience, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor realms.
